Biography of Sunny Okosun
Sonny Okosun was born on January 1, 1947 in Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria and died on May 24, 2008 in Washington DC. He was one of the leading Nigerian musician of the late 1970s to the mid 1980s, from Esan in Edo State, in the South-South of Nigeria. He was
from the Esan ethnic group.
Sunny Okosun started his first band which he called The Postmen in Enugu in the year 1965. In the year 1969 he decided to join Melody Maestros band of the music icon Victor Uwaifo. In the year 1972, he started another band of his own called Ozzidi with a group known as Paperback Limited. He named his band Ozziddi after a renowned Ijaw river god. From then on, he released several musical albums either with Ozziddi or personal. Sunny?s musical styles includes reggae, highlife, Afro-funk, and gospel, among etc. He made music in a number of languages, including English, Esan, Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa.
In 1977, Sunny Okosun came up with a song titled ?Fire in Soweto?. "Fire in Soweto" became a major international hit. Sunny Okosun was featured in an anti-apartheid album titled Sun City, and his song "Highlife" was one of the soundtracks of the 1986 film Something Wild.
In the 1980s, when Sunny Okosuns?s mainstream success started to fade, he switched his musical career to gospel songs and added the title ?Evangelist? to his name to become Evangelist Sonny Okosun.
Sunny Okoson died when he was 61 years old of colon cancer on May 24, 2008 at Howard University Hospital, Washington DC.
