John Brokaw was born to French Huguenot immigrants, Bourgon Broucard and Catherine Lefevre in about 1680 in Flatbush, New York. The family had ten children. The name "Broucard" evolved into a spelling that turned into "Brokaw."

John moved to Somerset County, New Jersey with his parents in 1702. There he married Sarah Teunise Van Middleswart about two years later. Between 1705 and 1728, they had eight children.

On July 15, 1725, he purchased 3,000 acres of land on the east side of the South Branch of the Raritan River, near Millstone, New Jersey. He was appointed Commissioner of the Peace in 1725. John first built a log house on his land, then put up a ?low-roof? house, which stood until at least 1909.

John died in Raritan, New Jersey in 1740. His will showed that he owned eight slaves at the time of his death. He also had such possessions as a silver cup and tankard, a large Dutch Bible, a gun and two swords. His wife survived him, but it's not known when she died.

Famous descendants of John and Sarah Brokaw include Humphrey Bogart and Tom Brokaw.
