Biography of Boni Haruna
Boni Haruna was born on June 12, 1957. He studied political science at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Boni Haruna was elected to the post of governor of Adamawa State
in April 1999 and re-elected in April 2003. The 2003 election result was contested by the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), which claimed that the election was massively rigged. An electoral court declared the election invalid. However, an appeals court overturned the finding and reinstated Haruna.
In March 2006, Boni Haruna spoke out against a third term bid of President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying most pro-third term governors supported the bid because they had something to hide. He repeated his opposition during a meeting of the 20 state governors in April 2006.
In September 2006, Governor Ahmed Yerima of Zamfara State, Boni Haruna of Adamawa, and other senior politicians joined US Ambassador John Campbell cut the ribbon to launch the full Visa US Embassy in Abuja. The same month, the President of the Committee on Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, said Boni Haruna was among 31 state governors under investigation by the commission. In February 2007, the House of Assembly of the State of Adamawa served Boni Haruna with a notice of impeachment for alleged misconduct and the inability to perform the functions of the office as required by the Constitution 1999.
Just before the national elections in April 2007, Haruni switched allegiance to the Action Congress of the newly formed party (AC). In April 2009, Boni Haruna said he was dropping support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, due to failure of Atiku to listen to the advice of he gave him. The division may have been due to Haruna's decision to return to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, while Atiku was still with the Action Congress.
In August 2008, Haruna was arrested by the Committee on Economic and Financial Crimes headed by Farida Waziri on charges of corruption while serving as governor of the State between 1999 and 2007 and was denied his request for bail. In November 2008, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Haruna permission to travel to the United States for medical treatment.
In May 2009, Boni Haruna was re-processed by the Federal Government on alleged money laundering involving N100 million, following the discovery of new evidence relating to his period in office as governor of Adamawa. In August 2009, the Committee of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought a 28 counts charge against Boni Haruna bordering on forgery and illicit circulation of about N150m to an unknown destination. In October 2009, the EFCC filed amended charges of 28 counts against Boni Haruna and three others. In November 2009, the EFCC opposed a request by Haruna to obtain new travel documents for medical treatment in the United States.
Haruna competed in the 9 April 2011 elections for the Adamawa North senatorial district under the plat form of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Bindo Jibrilla (PDP) defeated him, probing 75.112 votes against 70,890 votes of Haruna. The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) candidate, Mohammed Abba scored 22,866.
