Eight Children Left Without a Father ? John Ross

B. 5 Feb 1764 in New Jersey
M. 7 Sep 1788 in New Jersey
Wife: Martha Van Tuyl
D. 2 Mar 1808 in New Jersey

John Ross was born February 5, 1764 in New Jersey to John Ross and Martha Anderson, one of five children. The family is believed to have lived in Middlebrook; their heritage was Scottish. John may have served in the final years of the American Revolution; a John Ross enlisted from Somerset County, New Jersey. John owned a dragoon?s sword, which indicates he was likely a military man.

On September 7, 1788, John married Martha Van Tuyl. They settled in Boundbrook, New Jersey had ten children born between 1789 and 1806, although two sons died as infants. John was listed as a slaveholder in Somerset County in 1805. Other records showed that he owned four slaves in 1808: a man, a woman, an 8 year-old girl and a 6 year-old boy. Slavery was not phased out in New Jersey until the 1840s.

John Ross died of unknown causes on March 2, 1808 at the age of 44. He appears to have died suddenly, as his will was made out only a few days before his death. All of his eight surviving children were underage and his father was a witness on his will. Amongst the items in the inventory for his will, John owned one share in the New Jersey Turnpike. He was buried in the Boundbrook Presbyterian Churchyard.
