A Doctor in Colonial America ? John Kittredge

B. 24 Jan 1666 in Billerica, Massachusetts
M. 3 Apr 1685 in Billerica, Massachusetts
Wife: Hannah French
D. 24 Apr 1714 in Billerica, Massachusetts

John Kittredge was the oldest son of John Kittredge and Mary Littlefield. He was born January 24, 1666 in Billerica, Massachusetts, where he would live his entire life. He had four younger brothers.

John's father died in 1676 and his mother married again the following year to John French. In his father?s will, John was left a double portion of property while his brothers only received a single share ? this was due to his status as the oldest son, a common practice in those times. John and his brothers were underage, and John received his land when he turned 21 in 1687. His mother and step-father had six children. His step-father also had a daughter named Hannah by his first wife, and on April 3, 1685, John married her. Between 1685 and 1706, they had 12 children.

Like his father and namesake, John practiced medicine. His father was said to have no formal training, and it's uncertain what medical education John may have had. It is known that John was the first to be called Dr. Kittredge and the profession would be passed on to further generations of Kittredge men.

John died on April 24, 1714 and is buried in Shawshin Cemetery in what is now Tewksbury, Massachusetts. His wife Hannah lived on for over 40 years, dying on October 9, 1755 at the age of 90.
