He was appointed as the Comptroller-General of Customs on August 27, 2015 by General Muhammadu Buhari, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Prior to his appointment as the new Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Ali was the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari prior to his assumption of office as the president of Nigeria.
After retirement, as a Nigerian Army Colonel, he became Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum, a northern lobbying group, and a supporter of Major General Muhammadu Buhari inhis bid to run for president.
