Late Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo was born in the year 1909 at his home town, Ikenne, Ogun State. After his earliest education, Obafemi Awolowo worked as a pupil teacher. Later he gained admission
into Wesley college, Ibadan where he trained as a teacher. At Wesley college, Obafemi Awolowo studied shorthand and typing. Thereafter, he worked briefly in Lagos and later got employed in Wesley College as a Clerk.

Around 1930?s, Obafemi Awolowo went into trading. Later he became a newspaper reporter and editor. Having engaged in various businesses, Obafemi Awolowo was able to raise money to travel to the United Kingdom where he studied and obtained a law degree from London School of Economics In 1944.  In 1947, he qualified to practice law in UK. After his qualification, he returned to Nigeria and set up his own private law practice. In 1949, he established the Nigerian Tribune, a newspaper company. On January 12, 1978, Obafemi Awolowo was conferred with the title of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

In the year 1950, he founded a political Party called Action Group (AG). He later was appointed the first Premier of the Western Nigeria. In 1959, he established the first television in Africa called WNTV.

On September 11, 1963, Obafemi Awolowo was convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the government and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He  however spent only 3 years in prison, having been released on August 3, 1966 after been granted state?s pardon.
During the Nigerian-Biafran war, Obafemi Awolowo, haven supported the federal government against the southeastern Igbo secessionist state of Biafra, was appointed the Federal Commissioner and Vice President of the Federal Executive Council. Obafemi Awolowo, being the Federal Commissioner of Finance, is said to have came up with the name ?Naira? for Nigerian Currency.

In 1883, Obafemi Awolowo retired from politics and died  on May 9, 1987 in Ikenne his home town.
