Biography of Raymond Dokpesi
Raymond Anthony Aleogho Dokpesi was born in the year 1951 at Ibadan, Oyo State of Nigeria. He is a native of Agenebode in Edo state of Nigeria.
Dokpesi had his secondary education at Loyola College Ibadan. He later moved to the Immaculate Conception College (ICC) Benin city. After his secondary education, Dokpesi attended the University of Benin, and was one of the pioneer students of the institution. He then moved to Poland, where he also studied for his PhD at University of Gdansk, earning his Doctorate degree in Marine Engineering under the sponsorship of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur who saw him through his secondary school days to his University level.
When he came out of school, Raymond Dokpesi became the personal assistant to Alhaji Bamaga Tukur, who then was a general manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority. He also worked as a civil servant in the Federal Ministry of Transport under Alhaji Umaru Dikko and General Garba Wushishi.
Dokpesi floated a radio station during the deregulation of broadcasting in Nigeria under the Ibarahim Babaginda regime. In the year 1994 he launched the first ever Nigerian private FM radio station. Two years afterwards, he floated the Africa Independent Television, making him a pacesetter in the world of Nigeria media.
Dokpesi?s TV, Africa Independent Television (AIT) has gained much coverage. They launced their signal in the United States of America on September 20, 2003. Presently, the signals of AIT is received as far as the entire United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe.
Dokpesi?s achievements are highlighted as follows:
? Establishment of the first indigenous shipping line in Nigeria.
? Establishment of the first privately owned radio station Raypower FM in Nigeria.
? Establishment of the first Nigerian global TV which was Africa's first ever Satellite TV station.
? Establishment of the first TV station to run 24-hour broadcasting in Nigeria.
? Launching of the African Independent signals in the United States.
? Chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria.
? He Helped in the formulation of the popular Nigerian Shipping Policy Act(decree) of 1986.
Dokpesi has also ventured into politics. He was the campaign manager for Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. His effort during the campaign contributed in seeing Tukur into the then Gongola state government house. When Alharji Adamu Ciroma contested for presidency, he also participated in his presidential campaign. During the Alharji Bamanga Tukur's presidential campaign in 1993 he also played a vital role. He was likewise one of the campaign pillars of Peter Odili's presidential campaign. He is a notable leader of the South-South People Assembly (SSPA) an organisation that seeks to promote south-south people of Nigeria.
