Biogrraphy of Majek Fashek
Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek, was born in Benin, Edo State on February 6 (His real birth date is not known as both parents gave him contradicting months, but he later adopted his musical hero Bob Marley's birthday - 6 February - as
his own) to a Yoruba father and an Edo mother. He is a Nigerian reggae singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is also known as The Rainmaker.
Majek Fashek?s parents separated when he was very tender. After his parents separated he lived in Lagos with his father, who then was a school principal. His father died when Fashek was only ten years old; consequently, Majek Fashek moved back to Benin City with his mother, and joined the choir in his local church together with his cousin future band-mate Amos McRoy Gregg. At the choir, Majek Fashek learned how to play the trumpet and guitar. He then also began to compose songs for the choir.
Majek Fashek actually started his music career In the early eighties. Then, he went by the stage name Rajesh Kanal and joined the group Jastix with McRoy Gregg, and lead singer Black Rice. They were popular then as the in-house band on the show Music Panorama aired on NTA Benin. They also toured with the reggae group The Mandators.
Jastix later disbanded and shortly after that In the year 1988, Fashek, who was already going by the the name Majek Fashek, signed with Tabansi Records and began a solo career. He released the album Prisoner of Conscience and became Nigeria's topmost reggae artist. This was after the song "Send Down The Rain" became the most popular song of the year. In the year 1989, Majek Fashek won four PMAN awards including ?Album of the Year?, "Song of the Year", and "Reggae Artist of the Year".
Majek Fashek was married to Rita Fashek. It was to Rita that he wrote the song "Without You". They had four children together but have since divorced.
