The worldlings live their lives on earth as if it would last forever. People don?t care any more about where they would spend their eternity. It is against this background that I have labored to write today on the regrets of a sinner who failed to repent until death. When he finds himself across the border of eternity, the sinner shall have the following regrets:
1. One of the regrets of a condemned Christian will arise from his consideration of the little he
would have done to save his soul which he failed to do. The thought that he would have been able to obtain eternal life would torment the sinner every day in hell fire. Then, it would be very clear to the damned that the pleasure that lured him into hell fire was really momentary. Each moment in hell, the sinner would say, if I had abstained from such a gratification; if I had avoided such an occasion of sin-such a companion, I wouldn?t have found myself here.
2. The sinner would remember the good examples given to him by his contemporaries who
led a holy life, which he did not follow. He will recollect vividly that all the graces, divine lights, holy inspirations, loving calls etc, had all been given to him just to help him obtain salvation and be saved, but he rejected all, abused them, and threw them into the dust bin. He would realize that the gifts of health, riches, respectability of family, talents, fame etc were all bestowed on him to enable him obtain the eternal salvation, but he abused all of them and rather used same to incur the wrath of God.
3. The sinner shall regret all the time wasted on earth because he would suddenly realize that there is no more time to repair his ruins.
4. The sinner shall regret that he will suffer eternally for little inconvenience he would have borne in the short time he spent here on earth. It will suddenly become clear to him that the life on earth was nothing in duration compared to the one he now found himself. What will the fifty or sixty years which they may have spent in this world be to compare to the abyss of eternity. He will spend a thousand millions of years in torments, and shall see that his miserable eternity has just begun. He will regret that he had the opportunity to spend the same eternity with God in an un-interrupted happiness, but for his sins.
5. The damned will regret the great good which he has lost by his own fault. To him, the voluntary loss of Paradise will be a greater torment than the very pains of Hell.
6. The greatest regret of the damned is the fact that he has lost God forever. This is the
greatest pain in hell fire, more painful than the fires of hell itself. The damned would wish that a thousand Hells be added to the hell which he suffers, provided he was not deprived of God; but his hell shall consist in seeing himself deprived of God through his own fault.
7. Finally the damned shall suddenly realize how so much God wanted him to be saved and
had given him the choice of eternal life, but instead, he voluntarily chose eternal damnation. He shall see that, if he had wanted, he might have acquired eternal happiness, and that by his own choice, he was condemned.
Let us therefore struggle in this life to know God, love him, serve him so that we can qualify to spend our eternity with him in the world to come.
