Patrick McGuire has a sketchy background. He was born on Christmas Day 1834 somewhere in Ireland; there are no records that show a more specific location. His death record gave the names Lawrence and Julia McGuire for his parents. He would have been an adolescent at the time of the potato famine; possibly he left Ireland with his parents. Patrick is believed to have settled in New York, and he fathered at least three children there. The name of his first wife is unknown, and she seems to have died between 1863 and 1866.

Patrick moved to Sibley County, Minnesota where he married Mary Toole, another immigrant from Ireland, on January 7, 1867. In 1870, Patrick was living in the town of Belle Plain working as a railroad laborer. Ten years later, he was a farmer in Green Isle, a town with a primarily Irish population. Patrick and Mary had six children between 1871 and 1881.

Of Patrick's children from his first marriage, only daughter Katherine has been identified in records as an adult. In 1881, she married a man named Joseph Renshaw Brown. His father, also named Joseph Renshaw Brown, was a prominent Minnesota pioneer and "Indian agent," and his mother was a half-breed Indian. Joseph and Katherine moved to South Dakota where they had a large family, living some of the time on an Indian reservation.

On April 1, 1882, Patrick died of unknown causes at the age of 47. He was buried in St. Brendan's Cemetery in Green Isle.
