Martin Furlong was born in County Wexford, Ireland on November 12, 1797. He married Ellen Radford on June 15, 1818 in the Rathangan Parish section, and the baptisms of many of his children are also from there, so presumably this is where he was from. The area around Rathangan was mostly farmland that bordered the southern coastline; it's still largely farmland today.

Martin and Ellen had at least five children between 1819 and 1825, three boys and two girls. Sometime between 1825 and 1827, Ellen died, and Patrick married Mary Butler (their marriage is not amongst the Rathangan Parish records). They were known to have had eight daughters born between 1827 and 1848. There were probably others who died young since Martin was said to have had 15 children.

The Furlong family migrated to America during the Irish potato famine, arriving at the port of New Orleans on the ship Essex on December 13, 1851. In 1852, Martin moved the family to West St. Paul, Minnesota, an immigrant community in Dakota County. He was one the first white settlers to have his family with him. One of his daughters was noted as the first death in the town. It was said that the soil was so rocky on their land, that they couldn't dig a well and that "water had to be carried for blocks." Martin was listed in West St. Paul as a farmer in 1860 and 1870, but in about 1878 moved to the town of Rosemount.

Martin died on July 28, 1889 at the age of 91. His obituary stated that ?he was highly esteemed,? and that he left behind many friends. It also said that he lived in Pine Bend, Minnesota at the time of his death. The funeral took place at the Catholic church in Inver Grove and he was buried at St. Patrick Cemetery. Martin Furlong had 62 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren at his death, and his wife Mary survived him.
