Why Nigeria Resists Gay Marriage And Practice.

Some countries of the world who claim to be front liners in human right have redefined marriage to include same-sex couples. Most recently, the United State?s Supreme court sanctioned same sex marriage and made it practicable in all the 50 states in that country. Irland, the country that brought Catholicism to Nigeria also joined the others recently. They now hold that marriage is ?the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of
all others?. So far, countries that have adopted same sex marriage include but not limited to United States, Island, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Portugal Argentina, United Kingdom, Australia etc. These countries now join forces to mount pressure on Nigeria to also adopt same sex marriage.
To those of us in this part of Africa called Nigeria, it is our believe and custom that marriage is the union of man and woman who live as husband and wife for the common good of the couple and above all, for the well being of their children, of the society and the entire human race. We believe that the above implication and definition/meaning of marriage has been in existence and thus precedes and transcends the all societies and countries. In fact, it is part of the natural law which is in consonance with the right reasoning and agrees with the nature. It is of universal application unchanging and everlasting.
Nigerian Society and government rejects gay marriage because it rejects the natural definition of marriage and replaces it with a different definition that totally removes reproduction from the union. While Nigeria does not directly want to discriminate against any particular group, we want the institution of marriage to remain the founding unit of the human society just as nature made it. We also want sexual union to remain solely for a man and a woman who have committed to each other for the sake and good of their children.
Nigeria is accused of criminalizing and marginalizing gay people. The westerners believe that people should be at liberty to follow their dives and inclination without being made to risk criminal prosecution. Nigeria challenge the west to decriminalize bigamy because people should be at liberty to marry as many wives as they want. They justify the law of bigamy because they believe that marrying more than one wife is against natural justice equity and good conscience. This is also how same sex marriage is believed to be against the law of nature and consequently, a law was put in place to check it. Restricting marriage to a man and a woman is therefore reasonable and not discriminatory.
