Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan was born on 29 January, 1944 to Bartholomew and Joan Onaiyekan in Kabba, now known as Kogi State. Cardinal John Onaiyekan is the Roman Catholic
Cardinal Archbishop of Abuja.
His Eminence John Onaiyekan had his Primary Education in St. Mary?s Catholic School in Kabba from 1949 to 1956. He proceeded to St. Micheal?s Secondary School in Aliade, in Benue State from 1957 to 1962. John Onaiyekan later entered into Ss. Peter and Paul Major Seminary in Bodija, Ibadan from 1963 until 1965. He eventually proceeded to Rome and rounded up his religious studies in 1969.
Cardinal John Onaiyekan was ordained a Priest of the Roman Catholic Church on August 3, 1969. He held some key positions in the church and later got ordained as a Bishop on January 6, 1983 and was Bishop of Ilorin diocese in Kwara State. In 1990 however, he became a Coadjutor of the Diocese of Abuja. John Onaiyekan became the Metropolitan Bishop of Abuja when the diocese became a metropolitan see in 1994.
Cardinal John Onaiyekan became the Vice President of the Catholic Bishops Conference in 1994 and rose to the position of President in the year 2000.
Cardinal John Onaiyekan was the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) from 2007 till 2010.

His Eminence John Onaiyekan was made Cardinal on November 24, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI and as a Cardinal Priest, he was assigned the titular church of San Saturnino.
Cardinal John Onaiyekan was appointed to serve as a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith by Pope Benedict XVI on January 31, 2013 also as a member of the Presidential Committee of the Pontifical Council for the Family. He was thereafter appointed as the Apostolic Adminstrator ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of Ahiara diocese, Imo State on July 3, 2013 by Pope Francis.
