Biography
Biography of Mala Kachalla
Mala Kachalla was born in the year 1941 in Maiduguri, Borno state of Nigeria.
He was elected into office as governor of Borno State of Nigeria, in
April 1999 under the platform of the All People's Party (APP), which was renamed the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP), owing to a split between factions. In August 2000, the state of Borno under the leadership of Mala Kachalla adopted the sharia legal system. However, Mala Kachalla reassured Christians, that Sharia, which includes punishments such as amputation and flogging, would only apply to Muslims. In February 2001, an Implementation Committee of the Sharia, which investigated the practical steps involved in the introduction of Sharia in the state was established. After receiving the report, Mala Kachalla said the Sharia legal system would take effect in June 2001. Though the application was said to apply only to Muslims, the law however, prohibited gambling, alcohol and prostitution, among other vices.
In the year 2003, Kachalla wanted to contest for the governorship election under ANPP, before the elections of April 2003, it became clear that Ali Modu Sheriff would be the ANPP candidate for governor instead of Kachalla. Angered by the position, Kachalla left the ANPP and joined the Alliance for Democracy (AD). He was however defeated by Ali Modu Sheriff. In February 2006, Kachalla switched parties again, joining People's Democratic Party (PDP).
Kachalla died at his home in Maiduguri, the April 18, 2007, after a brief illness. He was 66 years old at the time of his death.
