In one of the occasions he was put to jail under the Sani Abacha?s regime, he almost died in the jail, but he never gave-up his activism, instead, he found his way outside Nigeria, to the United States of America where he traveled in search of channels and opportunities that would further equip him in the struggle to achieve a better Nigeria. In the process, he founded Sahara Reporters, the most popular platform for citizens? journalism for Nigerians that gives Nigerians chance to report things that otherwise should not have been reported in the mainstream media.

He also ran the cost of making a lot of international calls to Nigeria. When he purchases a card for such calls he keeps making his calls until he runs out of credit, then he would stop, and wait until he had money again to buy another card. Sowere also supported the mission of Sahara Reporters with the moneys made from Google Adsense, which according to him is the most democratic way of participating in advertising. When he started back then, Sowere was making at least 50 dollars every month, but over time he began to make a lot more money. Sowere also got support from people through PayPal, which is an open and transparent way of receiving donations from friends.
