Ben Ayade later joined politics by becoming a member of the People Democratic Party.
In April 9, 2011, He contested for the position of a Senator, not having any serious competitor in the race, he won with 91,123 votes. His closest rival Patrick Agbe of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), had 11,056 votes. During his term in the senate, he was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Senate committee on Environment and Ecology. He was also a member of other senate committees such as committees on Education, Marine Transport, Petroleum Downstream, and Drugs/Narcotics/Crime etc.
On April 11, 2015, Benedict contested for, and won election as the governor of Cross River State of Nigeria.
